We are pleased to announce that Miya Mizuta Lippit‘s forthcoming Study of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Aesthetic Life: The Artistic Discourse of Beauty in Modern Japan, has received a 2015 Meiss/Mellon Author’s Book Award from the College Art Association.
Professor Lippit’s book, which will be published by the Harvard University Asia Center, is an interdisciplinary study of the figure of the beautiful woman (bijin) in the Meiji period (1868-1912).
Aesthetic Life is one of only five books selected this year for the Meiss/Mellon award. The award is given to emerging scholars for their first publication to help defray the high costs of image licensing and reproduction for monographs in art history and visual studies. Awardees are selected on the basis of the quality and demonstrated financial need of their project.
A Yale PhD who earned her BA at Columbia, Professor Lippit currently teaches at the University of Southern California.
