Brown Bag Lecture

Featuring Klaus Muehlhahn, Chair Professor of Chinese History and Culture, FU Berlin

Moderated by Madeleine Zelin, Dean Lung Professor of Chinese Studies; Professor of History, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and Department of History, Columbia University

In this talk, Klaus Muehlhahn will discuss his new book, Making China Modern, which moves beyond the standard framework of Cold War competition and national resurgence. Mühlhahn situates twenty-first-century China in the nation’s long history of creative adaptation. Telling a story of crisis and recovery, Making China Modern explores the versatility and resourcefulness that matters most to China’s survival, and to its future possibilities.
