Rank outsider Rodrigo Duterte, a tough-talking mayor who had never held national office won a surprise victory in the May 2016 Philippine presidential elections. Since then, he has been the focus of intense domestic and international controversy, partly but not solely because of his brutal crackdown on the drug trade. This conference brings together a distinguished group of American and Filipino scholars, journalists and activists to discuss the Duterte phenomenon.

We will open the event on the evening of Oct. 17, with a book launch for A Duterte Reader: Critical Essays on Duterte’s Early Presidency, a joint publication by the Cornell and Ateneo university presses. At the launch, there will be a performance of an excerpt from “Wailing Women,” on the women mourning loved ones killed in the drug war, by Ea Torrado, a Filipina dancer.

Co-sponsored by the Columbia Journalism School, New York Southeast Asia Network, the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, the Columbia Center for Justice, Asian American Writers Workshop, and the University of Sydney Southeast Asia Center
