The Weatherhead East Asian Institute congratulates longtime faculty member Xiaobo Lü, who has been appointed to an Ann Whitney Olin Professorship in Barnard College. Barnard College awards the Ann Whitney Olin Professorship to faculty members on the basis of scholarship, teaching, and other contributions to the academic community.
An active member of the WEAI community, Professor Lü served in the Spring 2018 semester as WEAI Acting Director and previously served as WEAI Director from 2001-2003 and 2004-2006. He is Professor and Chair of Political Science at Barnard and researches Chinese politics and society, political corruption and governance, and the political economy of transition from state socialism. Professor Lü was also the founding Director of Columbia Global Centers | East Asia in Beijing in 2008-10. He teaches courses on Chinese politics, political economy, and comparative politics. His research interests include post-socialist transition, corruption and good governance, regulatory reforms, and government-business relations. The author of Cadres and Corruption (2000), Professor Lü is currently working on a book manuscript, “From Player to Referee: the Rise of the Regulatory State in China.”
