Andrew J. Nathan Discusses the Pushback Against Xi Jinping in ChinaFile

Andrew-Nathan-Better550Andrew J. Nathan, the Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science at Columbia University, discussed the pushback within China against president Xi Jinping in a March 18, 2016 article in ChinaFile.

“Evidently he has gone too far in creating a cult of personality that has sought to place him beyond criticism even by cronies and elite supporters,” Professor Nathan argues. “China is no longer a country of peasants. The Party is no longer an organization of semi-literate ex-guerrillas. Even in its slick modern version—replete with online cartoons and rap songs—the old-fashioned leader cult has become anachronistic.”
