Call for Papers for the 2016 Consortium of African and Asian Studies (CAAS) Symposium

2014 CAAS Symposium
2014 CAAS Symposium

The 2016 Symposium for the Consortium of African and Asian Studies (CAAS) will take place October 22-23, 2016 at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in Japan. This is a Call for Papers for Columbia faculty and graduate students who wish to participate. The theme is Crossing Boundaries: Asians and Africans on the Move. All disciplines are welcome. More information is available here.

The deadline for applications is JULY 31, 2016.

As many of you know, Columbia hosted the CAAS annual symposium in October 2014, with participation of 35 graduate students and faculty from the seven CAAS institutions around the world (Leiden in the Netherlands, INALCO in Paris, SOAS in London, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS), the National University of Singapore (NUS), Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, and Columbia, the only North American member of the consortium). Supported by ten Columbia Institutes and Departments, it was a stunning success, with excellent papers and transnational discussions, later published in the Proceedings. Last year at the annual Symposium at Hankuk University in Seoul, Columbia students again participated and their papers have been published in the most recent Proceedings.

We especially encourage graduate students in all disciplines and schools to submit proposals. Please see the attached Call for Papers for details.

Two notes: 1) European and Asian members of the consortium include what we call the Middle East in their definition of Asian and African studies. and 2) While there is no established university funding for travel, in past years nearly all the students managed to get financial support from a combination of their departments, institutes, and/or schools.

We hope that Columbia will again be a lively presence at this ever more successful international Symposium.

Please let Katherine de Rosset Forshay (kdf2116@columbia.edu) or Professor Carol Gluck (cg9@columbia.edu) know if you have any questions.
