Carol Gluck, the George Sansom Professor of History and Chair of the Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University, chaired the June 24, 2016 special roundtable “Horizons of Hope in Asia” at the Association for Asian Studies in Asia conference in Kyoto.
In addition to Professor Gluck, the roundtable featured Jie-Hyun Lim of Sogang University, Rwei-ren Wu of Academia Sinica, William Kelly of Yale University, and Katherine Bowie of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The panelists discussed an array of challenges facing Asia: environmental threats and disasters, economic inequality within and between nations, competing nationalisms, and rising political and military tensions. The panelists talked about instances from their respective areas and perspectives when resilience and creativity prevailed over alienation and despair. Following the theme of the conference, the topic was hope: how to study it, think about it, make the most of it for the sake of a better Asian — and global — future.
