Carol Gluck, the George Sansom Professor of History and Chair of the Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University, delivered the Fourth Annual Nancy Bernkopf Tucker Memorial Lecture at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C., on April 12, 2016. Professor Gluck’s lecture was titled “Present Pasts: The Politics of Memory in East Asia.”
Nancy Bernkopf Tucker (1948-2012), for whom the Wilson Center’s lecture series was named, was a distinguished historian of US-China relations who had studied with Columbia University professor Dorothy Borg. After receiving her PhD and the Certificate of the East Asian Institute from Columbia, Professor Tucker taught at Georgetown University, served in government, and wrote a number of books, including Patterns in the Dust: Chinese-American Relations and the Recognition Controversy, 1949–1950, and The China Threat: Memories, Myths and Realities in the 1950s.
