Continuing the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration of 1868, known as the founding event of modern Japan, Carol Gluck gave the keynote lecture at the International Symposium on The Meiji Restoration and Asian Modernization” at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, on November 15, 2018 and delivered a similar lecture with the title, “The Danger of a Simple Story: The Meiji Restoration at 150” at the University of Vienna on November 27.
