Carol Gluck, the George Sansom Professor of History and Chair of the Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University, was interviewed on August 30, 2017 in Japan’s Asahi Shimbun newspaper on the impending abdication of Emperor Akihito and the accompanying calendrical change in the name of the era, which, under the current emperor, has been known as the Heisei period.
