In a recent article in the Nikkei Shimbun, Professor Carol Gluck discussed the evolution of public perception in the US of the emperor of Japan. In the more than 70 years since the end of the Second World War, US views of the position of emperor have changed dramatically, with a role once seen as host to a leading figure in the war taking on new status as a symbol of peace, Gluck explained.
