The Journal of Korean Studies (JKS) is dedicated to publishing quality articles, in all disciplines, on a broad range of topics concerning Korea, both historical and contemporary. The Journal began at the University of Washington and was published in South Korea (Dong-A Publishing Company) in 1969. The original series had 2 issues Volume 1 No. 1 (1969) and Volume 1 No. 2 (1971) were edited by Dr. David Mesler.
In 1979 Dr. James Palais, former University of Washington professor of Korean History, edited and published Volumes 1-5 of the second series of The Journal of Korean Studies; Volumes 6-8 1988-92 were edited by Mike Robinson. For thirteen years it was a leading academic forum for innovative, in-depth research on Korea. In 2004 editors Gi-Wook Shin and John Duncan revived this outstanding publication at Stanford University.
In August 2008 editorial responsibility transferred back to the University of Washington, under the editorial guidance of Clark Sorensen and Donald Baker. In 2011 The Journal of Korean Studies began publishing two issues a year. The spring issue is a regular issue including diverse topics and book reviews. The fall issue is a thematic issue devoted to one topic.
The Journal of Korean Studies will be housed by The Center for Korean Research in the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University beginning July 1, 2016. The JKS is currently accepting submissions for its spring 2017 issue, co-edited by Charles Armstrong and Theodore Hughes.
