The Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute book series is pleased to share video footage of Christopher Rea receiving the Association for Asian Studies’ 2017 Joseph Levenson Post-1900 Book Prize (China) for his Study of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute The Age of Irreverence: A New History of Laughter in China. Timothy Brook of the University of British Columbia presented Dr. Rea with the award on March 16, 2017 at the annual Association for Asian Studies conference in Toronto. The Joseph Levenson Levenson Book Prize recognizes books that offer “the greatest contribution to increasing understanding of the history, culture, society, politics, or economy of China.”
Published by the University of California Press, Dr. Rea’s Study of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute examines how, during the time from the 1890s to the 1930s, people in China created new definitions of what was considered funny.
