Columbia Invites Applications for Assistant Professor Position in Japanese Visual Culture, Film and Media

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University is currently inviting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in modern/contemporary Japanese humanities specializing in Visual Culture, Film and Media, to start in September 2018.

Demonstrated interest in comparative research and a deep knowledge of modern Japanese literature and culture are necessary. Ph.D. required by the time of appointment. Regardless of specialization, the successful candidate should be prepared to teach undergraduate survey classes on Japanese film, animation, and popular culture, and contribute to EALAC’s global core teaching. Graduate instruction will involve training specialists in film and media studies, along with other PhD and MA students whose focus may be on literature, history, art history, religion, anthropology, etc. Besides working closely with other Japanese studies faculty, the person hired for this position should expect to collaborate with China and Korea film and media specialists in the department, as well as with cognate scholars in other departments and programs. The department specifically seeks a creative scholar with the potential for developing new directions in humanities teaching and research.

The committee will begin considering applicants on April 30, 2017 and will continue to accept applicants until the position is filled.
