Duncan McCargo, Visiting Professor of Political Science at Columbia University and Professor of Political Science at the University of Leeds, wrote an August 29, 2018 article in the Nikkei Asian Review titled “Politics of Thai Zoology: Closure of Bangkok’s Dusit Zoo Highlights State of Thai Democracy.”
“The banishment of the zoo to the provinces is a signal that times are changing under a new monarch, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who enjoys strong support from the ruling military junta,” Prof. McCargo writes. “As I circumnavigated the artificial lake that occupies much of the zoo’s ample acreage, I spotted through the fence newly erected signs proclaiming the adjacent area around the Dusit Palace a “royal zone.”
