Gerald L. Curtis, the Burgess Professor of Political Science Emeritus at Columbia University, was quoted in the March 14, 2018 Reuters article “Japan Political Longevity Likely Elusive in a Post-Abe World.” The article asks whether successors to current Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will experience similar longevity and power in office. “Abe is the culmination of changes that began earlier that made clear where the buck stops,” Professor Curtis said. “After Abe, how the institutions work depends on the individual.”
