Gerald L. Curtis, the Burgess Professor of Political Science Emeritus at Columbia University, was quoted in a December 5, 2016 Reuters article on Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s upcoming historic visit to Pearl Harbor.
“The planning for a Pearl Harbor visit has been in the works ever since Obama visited Hiroshima. It’s mostly a reciprocal gesture and symbolic of the U.S. and Japan burying the hatchet,” Professor Curtis says in the article. “It sends a message to China about the strength of the U.S.-Japan relationship (and is) probably also intended to send the same message to Trump.”
