Gerald L. Curtis, the Burgess Professor of Political Science Emeritus at Columbia University and a renowned expert on Japanese politics, was quoted in a July 4, 2017 Reuters article titled “Japan’s Abe Vulnerable After Party’s Dismal Poll Showing,” a July 6, 2017 article in The Economist titled “An Electoral Defeat puts Japan’s Prime Minister on the Back Foot,” and a July 10, 2017 article in The Wall Street Journal titled “Japan’s Trust in Shinzo Abe Dwindles as Scandals Beset Prime Minister.”
After the LDP, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling party, was defeated in the Tokyo Metropolitan Election, journalists investigated the impact of the loss to Abe. “As politicians realize that Abe is vulnerable, that will inspire them to do something,” Professor Curtis told Reuters. “He’ll probably survive, but even so, I don’t think he will get much done in terms of policy.”
