Weatherhead Global Connections
The Weatherhead East Asian Institute is committed to expanding East Asian scholarship in a global context by fostering academic exchanges and deepening the dialogue between the scholarly community and the dynamic actors shaping the region today. To address the complex issues facing students and scholars of every region of the globe, the Institute sponsors events, develops courses, and offers fellowships and study abroad opportunities that focus on research of transnational and cross-regional importance. Through extensive partnerships with international universities, nonprofit organizations, foundations, businesses, local governments, and the Columbia University community, our programs aim to promote a greater understanding of East Asia and the world.
Global Education
On campus, students have access to a range of classes that address broad, international themes. The International Network to Expand Regional and Collaborative Teaching program (INTERACT) was designed to improve global literacy among Columbia students through a network of postdoctoral fellows that focuses on cross-regional, trans-regional and interdisciplinary topics.The Global Scholars Program, a non-traditional study abroad program that utilizes the networks of the Global Columbia Centers, provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to explore major topics of transnational importance in real-world settings while developing their research skills. A new partnership between the Institute and the Bogazici University Asian Studies Center in Istanbul will also advance student exchange and collaborative research opportunities. Grants and fellowships provided by the Institute annually also offer students of all levels the chance to study and conduct research abroad.

The Institute organizes events locally and abroad on diverse, transnational topics for students, faculty, alumni, and the greater Columbia community, as well as the general public. These events include overseas lectures, special lectures, brown bag talks, and arts and culture programming in collaboration with international, national, and local organizations.
