GSP 2013 Overview
The 2013 Columbia University Global Scholars Program Summer Research Workshop offers Columbia University undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct comparative social science research in Beijing, China, and Santiago, Chile, under the guidance of Columbia faculty.
The 2013 program will focus on the theme of “Pathways to Development [PDF].” Students will explore how politics, economics, labor, and other transnational issues influence development in real-world settings through visits with the government, the business sector, and organizations and individuals involved in urban and rural labor. Upon return, students will take a capstone seminar based on their summer research experience and will conduct in-depth, comparative analysis focusing on various aspects of development in Asia and South America.
Faculty
Pablo M. Pinto, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and a member of the Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies at Columbia University, will teach the Chile segment of the Global Scholars Program. Professor Pinto’s areas of expertise are international and comparative political economy, with a regional focus in Latin America and East Asia. His main research analyzes the causes and consequences of globalization of production. Xiaodan Zhang, Research Scholar at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, and Xiaobo Lü, Professor of Political Science at Barnard College, will teach the Beijing, China, segment of the Global Scholars Program.
