Video is now available of Leta Hong Fincher, 2015-16 Visiting Assistant Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University and author of the 2014 book Leftover Women: The Resurgence of Gender Inequality in China, discussing the challenges and inequalities faced by women in contemporary China.
Professor Fincher, who was the first American to receive a PhD in Sociology from Tsinghua University, spoke with the Weatherhead East Asian Institute about the issues raised in her book, which was named one of the top five China books of 2014 by the Asia Society’s ChinaFile, one of the best foreign policy books in 2014 by FP Interrupted, and one of the best Asian books of 2014 by Asia House. It was also named one of Verso and New Left Review’s favorite feminist books for International Women’s Day in 2016.
