The Weatherhead East Asian Institute is pleased to announce that Myron L. Cohen, Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University and former Institute director, will receive the 2016 Chinese Anthropology Lifetime Achievement Award from the Shanghai Society of Anthropology.
Professor Cohen, who earned his PhD from Columbia in 1967 and has taught at the University since 1966, will be traveling to Shanghai in November to receive the award and give the keynote speech at the Annual Conference of the Chinese Anthropological Society. The author of such books as House United, House Divided: The Chinese Family in Taiwan and Kinship, Contract, Community, and State: Anthropological Perspectives on China , Professor Cohen has studied Chinese kinship, popular religion, community organization, economic culture, the interconnections between local society and state organization and ideology, and the cultural foundations of modern Chinese nationalism. We congratulate Professor Cohen on this recognition of his groundbreaking contributions to the study of China.
