On October 4, 2006, Professor Carol Gluck was presented with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon at the Japanese Consulate in New York City. Among those who came to celebrate this achievement were her sons, William and Thomas, her husband, Peter, and many of her colleagues, friends, students and admirers.
During the Conferment Ceremony, Ambassador Motoatsu Sakurai of the Consul General of Japan gave a speech to thank Professor Gluck for her efforts in the field of Japanese History, her passion and enthusiasm, as well as the breadth of her involvement in Asia Studies. Guest of Honor, Professor Alan Tansman—one of Professor Gluck’s former undergraduate students—spoke of her dedication to her students and the energizing effect she has on all those under her tutelage. Professor Gluck herself spoke of the honor she felt to have been able to make so many personal connections in Japan and with students during her career. She also thanked her husband, students, and colleagues for making her work possible. Finally, William Gluck offered a toast to his mother, emphasizing the appreciation that so many have shown for Professor Gluck’s efforts, intelligence, and generosity.
