Professor Paul Kreitman recently wrote an op-ed piece, “The Midway of Our Movie Screens Ignores Its Place Within America’s Oceanic Empire,” in the NewStatesman magazine. Kreitman criticizes the new film, Midway (2019), stating that “the movie conveniently ignores the fact that the United States was, like Japan and Great Britain, very much a colonial power during World War II.” He outlines the history of Midway in defending American interests during wartime efforts, but highlights the current environmental crisis that the Hawaiian island faces.
