Qin Gao, Professor of Social Policy and Social Work and Director, China Centre for Social Policy, at Columbia University, was quoted in the October 31, 2017 New York Times article “Xi Jinping Vows No Poverty in China by 2020. That Could Be Hard.” Professor Gao, an expert on social policy in China, told the Times that “The government’s initiatives sound good. But the question is how to sustain poverty reduction. Some people may be looking to quick fixes rather than really addressing poverty.”
