Professor Qin Gao, director of the China Center for Social Policy, was quoted in a recent CNN article titled “Xi Jinping is determined to end all poverty in China by 2020. Can he do it?”
The CNN piece cited a 2018 article from Professor Gao in a report from the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), which noted that broader government support for healthcare and employment would be more useful than initiatives on an individual basis or e-commerce measures.
“Only a combination of effective development measures and social policies and services can help China eradicate persisting rural poverty in the long run,” she said.
