Robert Barnett talks with The New York Times about Mongolia’s relations with China and the Dalai Lama

Robert-Barnett-Scholars_550Modern Tibetan Studies Director Robert Barnett (Retired January 2018) was quoted in The New York Times in a December 30, 2016 article titled “Mongolia, With Deep Ties to Dalai Lama, Turns From Him Toward China.”

Discussing Mongolia’s move toward China and away from the influence of the Dalai Lama, Professor Barnett noted “This is part of a near-global collapse in diplomatic capacity to handle certain kinds of pressure from China, which is, of course, far more acute for small, landlocked neighbors than major powers.”
