Modern Tibetan Studies Director Robert Barnett (Retired January 2018) talked with The New York Times in a June 10, 2016 article about prominent Tibet-related movies that are screening at the 2016 Shanghai International Film Festival. “These young Tibetan filmmakers are trying to make us look very hard without giving us answers,” Professor Barnett noted. “Many of their films provide an uncompromising view of difficulty in modern society. They’re not deliberately provocative, but they also don’t offer us comfortable resolutions.”
