Audio and photographs are now available from March 1, 2018 event “Turkey and Thailand: Unlikely Twins Revisited.”
The event featured Duncan McCargo, Visiting Professor of Political Science, Columbia University, and Ayse Zarakol, Reader in International Relations, University of Cambridge. Professors McCargo and Zarakol talked about the striking similarities in the history and politics of two nations at opposite ends of ‘Asia’ (broadly imagined), and raised critical questions about issues such urban-rural divides, national myths, the role of the military, and trends towards authoritarianism. The discussants debated the significance of subsequent developments for understanding this apparent parallelism. This event was co-sponsored by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and the Sakıp Sabancı Center for Turkish Studies.
