Daniel and Marianne Spiegel Fund Grant

Provides reimbursement of up to $2,000 for doctoral candidates incurring research expenses for social science research related to politics, social change, economic change, or policy in China after 1900. Students in the following schools are eligible: GSAS, SIPA, Social Work, Teachers College, and Public Health. Direct research expenses such as the following are allowable: books, research assistants, honoraria, data collection, telecommunications charges, software, printing and reproduction costs, in-country travel, conference attendance, and equipment/office supplies.

  • Purpose:
    • Summer or academic year funding for Ph.D. students doing social science research related to politics, social change, economic change, or policy on post-1900 China
  • Eligibility:
    • Ph.D. students in GSAS, SIPA, Social Work, Teachers College, and Public Health
    • Reimbursement for research expenses in Spring, Summer, or Fall semesters
    • Research expenses such as the following are allowable: books, research assistants, honoraria, data collection, telecommunications charges, software, printing and reproduction costs, in-country travel, conference attendance, and equipment/office supplies.
  • Provides:
    • Up to $2,000
  • Selection criteria include:
    • Academic excellence
    • Demonstrated commitment to East Asia, and to incorporating it in one’s long-term academic or professional career goals
  • Recipients of the award must report to the Weatherhead East Asian Institute any additional funds, such as another grant, that they receive in support of the same activities. The total amount of funding received for the project must not exceed the limits dictated by the student’s school. Should a student receive multiple sources of funding for the same project, the WEAI will adjust or withdraw the amount granted to the student so as to remain below the cap dictated by the student’s school.
