Summer Funding for PhD Students
GSAS-WEAI Funding Policy
To better serve the needs of students the WEAI is restructuring its commitment to summer research and language enhancement for PhD students of East Asia in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences has instituted a new policy whereby all new and continuing PhD students will receive a total of 5 years of summer funding. All students should be made aware that they must apply to their home department in order to receive the GSAS summer stipend. WEAI will supplement GSAS PhD summer stipends per student per summer on a competitive basis. Students must apply separately to WEAI for supplemental funding each summer in which they are eligible. Applications for supplemental funding will be judged on the basis of the student’s proposed summer program and will only be available to those students whose plans involve the additional expense of overseas research or participation in a language or other course of study designed to enhance their research skills.

Provides reimbursement up to $2,000 for doctoral candidates incurring research expenses for social science research related to politics, social change, economic change, or policy in China after 1900. more

Provides partial support to advanced doctoral students for dissertation research or write-up. Candidates must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program in a history or social science department, and have a research focus on China. more
Junior Fellowship in Japan Studies
Available for the academic year for students at the write-up stage of their dissertation on modern and contemporary Japan, with priority to history and social science. more

Available for the academic year to social science and history doctoral students at the write-up stage of their dissertation, whose research is focused on East Asia. Preference is given to students focusing on modern Chinese history or political science. more
