We congratulate Diana Fu, assistant professor of Asian Politics at the University of Toronto, whose Study of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute Mobilizing Without the Masses: Control and Contention in China was awarded the 2018 Gregory Luebbert Prize for the best book in Comparative Politics from the American Political Science Association (APSA).
The book, published in 2017 by Cambridge University Press, is based on political ethnography inside both legal and blacklisted labor organizations in China. Mobilizing Without the Masses reveals how state repression is deployed on the ground and to what effect on mobilization. It presents a novel dynamic of civil society contention—mobilizing without the masses—that lowers the risk of activism under duress.
