During the summer of 2016, the Weatherhead East Asian Institute held widely attended panel discussions and receptions in Indonesia and Singapore to foster the growth of Columbia University alumni networks in Southeast Asia and to promote the study of Southeast Asia at Columbia. These events brought together Columbia faculty, students, and alumni as well as academics, students, and members of the public from Singapore and Jakarta.
On June 29, 2016, the Institute held a panel discussion at Jakarta’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel titled “Competing Visions for Southeast Asian International and Domestic Politics.” The discussion was introduced by Eugenia Lean, Director of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and Associate Professor of Chinese History at Columbia University, and featured Mari Pangestu, Former Minister of Trade and Former Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Republic of Indonesia; Xiaobo Lü, Professor of Political Science, Barnard College; Duncan McCargo, Visiting Professor of Political Science, Columbia University; Ann Marie Murphy, Senior Research Scholar, Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University; and Andrew J. Nathan, Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science, Columbia University.
On July 1, 2016, the Institute held a panel discussion at Singapore’s Four Seasons Hotel titled “Southeast Asia in Regional and Comparative Perspective: What China and the United States Have to Do with It.” This discussion was also introduced by Eugenia Lean, Director of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and Associate Professor of Chinese History at Columbia University, and featured Xiaobo Lü, Professor of Political Science, Barnard College; Duncan McCargo, Visiting Professor of Political Science, Columbia University; Ann Marie Murphy, Senior Research Scholar, Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University; and Andrew J. Nathan, Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science, Columbia University.
Additionally, the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore and the Weatherhead East Asian Institute co-hosted a panel discussion on June 27, 2016 titled “Superpower Rivalries and Regional Interests: Southeast Asia, China and the U.S.” This panel featured Eugenia Lean, Director of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and Associate Professor of Chinese History at Columbia University; Xiaobo Lü, Professor of Political Science, Barnard College; Duncan McCargo, Visiting Professor of Political Science, Columbia University; Ann Marie Murphy, Senior Research Scholar, Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University; and Andrew J. Nathan, Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science, Columbia University. Their discussion was moderated by Suzaina Bte Abdul Kadir, Associate Dean and Deputy Director of Academic Affairs at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.
