The Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University notes with sadness the passing of Harvard Professor Roderick MacFarquhar, a leading authority on Chinese politics and modern history and longtime director of our sister institution, the Harvard Fairbank Center. Rod was a great scholar, a terrific teacher, and a remarkably generous and warm person. He was a journalist, a Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom, and founding editor of The China Quarterly. He was a research fellow here at WEAI in 1969. His obituary from the New York Times is available here.
