The Weatherhead East Asian Institute mourns the death of alumnus Peter Kwong, who was Distinguished Professor of Urban Policy and Planning and Professor of Asian Studies at Hunter College.
Professor Kwong, who died March 17, 2017 at the age of 75, earned a Certificate in Asian Studies from the Institute. At Columbia University, he also received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering, a master’s degree from the School of International Affairs, and a doctorate in political science.
A leading scholar of Asian American studies and immigration, Professor Kwong published such books as Chinese America: The Untold Story of America’s Oldest New Community and Forbidden Workers: Chinese Illegal Immigrants and American Labor. He was also an award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker who produced “China’s Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province,” which received an Oscar nomination for best documentary (short subject) in 2010.
The Institute extends its condolences to Professor Kwong’s family and is deeply grateful for his deep commitment and pioneering contributions to Asian American and Asian studies.
