The Weatherhead East Asian Institute is saddened by the loss of Madge Huntington, who served as the Institute’s publications director for 20 years before her retirement in 2008. During her long tenure at the Institute, she expanded the Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute series and oversaw the founding of two additional publications series: Weatherhead Books on Asia; and Asia Perspectives: New Horizons in Asian History, Society, and Culture.
At the time of Madge’s retirement, WEAI’s then-director Myron Cohen made the following remarks:
“The success of these publication series has in large part been due to the hard and most capable work of Madge Huntington, who has been serving WEAI for the past twenty years. Madge has decided to retire, and while we of course respect her decision, and wish her the very best, we all very much regret her departure. She has been a member of a WEAI staff community whose overall dedication, solidarity, and excellent work makes my job as director far more enjoyable and rewarding than it would otherwise be.”
Madge died peacefully at home in Flagstaff, AZ on 17 July, 2020. She was 83. An obituary is available here.
