The Weatherhead East Asian Institute is devastated by the passing of Marianne Spiegel, a senior advisor at Human Rights Watch and longtime member of the WEAI community.
Mrs. Spiegel was a strong supporter of both GSAS and WEAI. In 2004, her generosity established the Daniel and Marianne Spiegel Fund to support doctoral candidates’ research expenses for social science research related to politics, social change, economic change, or policy in China after 1900.
Mrs. Spiegel earned her Bachelor’s degree (1950) from Adelphi University and received two Columbia degrees: an MA and a PhM, both in anthropology. She was enrolled at Columbia, taking courses through December 1990.
