WEAI Named One of 2017’s Top Regional Studies Centers and Think Tanks by UPenn’s Lauder Institute

The Weatherhead East Asian Institute (WEAI) at Columbia University is honored to announce that it has, for the second year in a row, been recognized as one of the top ten University-Affiliated Regional Studies Centers and as one of the top 40 University-Affiliated Think Tanks in the University of Pennsylvania Lauder Institute’s 2017 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report.

WEAI placed tenth in the “Best Regional Studies Center (University-Affiliated)” category in the report, which has been published annually since 2008 by the Lauder Institute’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program. Additionally, WEAI, along with Columbia University’s Earth Institute, was ranked among the top 40 “Best University Affiliated Think Tanks” in the world.

“It is wonderful that the Weatherhead East Asian Institute continues to be recognized as one of the world’s foremost centers for the study of East and Southeast Asia,” said Xiaobo Lü, Acting Director (Spring 2018) of the WEAI and Professor of Political Science at Barnard College. “As we prepare to celebrate our 70th anniversary in 2019, we look forward to building upon our legacy with innovative research and education programs that provide students, scholars, policymakers, and the wider public with more opportunities to deepen their knowledge about this vital region.”

Since its inception in 1989, the Lauder Institute’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) has focused on collecting data and conducting research on think tank trends and the role think tanks play as civil society actors in the policy-making process. In 2007, the TTCSP developed and launched its global index of think tanks, which is designed to identify and recognize centers of excellence in all the major areas of public policy research and in every region of the world.
