The Weatherhead East Asian Institute congratulates faculty member Yao Lu, who, with co-author Ran Tao, received the 2018 Best Article Award from the American Sociological Association (ASA) section on Collective Behavior and Social Movements for “Organizational Structure and Collective Action: Lineage Networks, Semiautonomous Civic Associations, and Collective Resistance in Rural China.” American Journal of Sociology 122.6 (2017): 1726-1774.
Yao Lu is an associate professor of sociology at Columbia University. Her research focuses on how migration intersects with social and political processes in China. Professor Lu’s current work examines how migration affects the political consciousness and collective action of people who remain in rural China, how the feminization of migration reconfigures gender attitudes and practices in rural areas, and how the migration of parents shapes family dynamics and the well-being of left-behind children.
