We are pleased to announce that WEAI associate research scholar Yukiko Koga‘s Study of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute Inheritance of Loss: The Political Economy of Redemption After Empire has received the American Anthropological Association’s 2017 Francis L. K. Hsu and Anthony Leeds Book Prizes.
The Francis L. K. Hsu Book Prize is awarded by the American Anthropological Association’s Society for East Asian Anthropology (SEAA) for the best English-language book published in the previous calendar year judged to have made the most significant contribution to the field. The prize is named for the late Francis L.K. Hsu (1909-2000), renowned cross-cultural anthropologist and former President (1977-78) of the American Anthropological Association.
The Anthony Leeds Prize is awarded each year by the Society for Urban, National, Transnational/Global Anthropology (SUNTA) for the outstanding book in urban, national and/or transnational anthropology published in the previous year. The prize is named in honor of the late Anthony Leeds, a distinguished pioneer in urban anthropology. The prize is awarded to a book that uses ethnographic data from complex, transnational, urban societies in methodologically and theoretically innovative ways. The goal of the prize is to showcase model studies that advance the research agenda of anthropologists.
Dr. Koga’s book, published by the University of Chicago Press in 2016, explores how the current generation of ordinary Chinese and Japanese, two to three generations removed from the direct experience of Japanese imperialism, encounter each other and experience and navigate colonial inheritances in the urban everyday of Northeast China.
A Columbia PhD, Dr. Koga currently teaches anthropology at Hunter College, the City University of New York.
