Zhanara Nauruzbayeva

nauruzbayevaZhanara Nauruzbayeva (Stanford PhD 2011) is a sociocultural anthropologist whose research falls within the concerns of political anthropology and economic anthropology, as well as the anthropology of art. Currently, she is working on an ethnography of Kazakhstan’s art world after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Tentatively entitled “Creating Markets: Artists and Cultural Capital in Postsocialist Kazakhstan,” this book-in-progress tells stories of different generations of visual artists as they adjusted to the withdrawal of state sponsorship and recruited private patronage. Nauruzbayeva’s project received the Robert Bayard Textor Award for Outstanding Creativity in Anthropology.
